Visions and Values

At The Hogarth Academy we take very seriously our responsibility to prepare children for life in modern Britain. We value the ethnic backgrounds of all pupils and families and undertake a variety of events and lessons to celebrate and explore these alongside other cultures in our country.

We ensure that the fundamental British Values are introduced, discussed and lived out through the ethos and work of the school. All curriculum areas provide a vehicle for furthering understanding of these concepts. Our cross curricular approach provides excellent opportunities to deepen and develop understanding developing the spiritual, moral, social and cultural education of our children.

The school makes considerable efforts to ensure children have exposure to a wide experience beyond their local community during which these concepts are shown, through for example, sporting events, a range of visits and use of outdoor education centres. Their strong rooted values-based understanding gives them an excellent platform for embracing difference.

Our school reflects British values in all that we do. We aim to nurture our children on their journey through life so they can grow into safe, caring, democratic, responsible and tolerant adults who make a positive difference to British society and to the world. We encourage our children to be creative, unique, open-minded and independent individuals, respectful of themselves and of others in our school, our local community and the wider world.

Support for equality of opportunity for all

• Respect and politeness are consistently promoted through whole school ethos, assemblies and awards
• Our PSHE curriculum embodies values of mutual respect and promotes the impact of all stakeholders, including pupils, working together with respect and consideration.
• Links and visits are promoted with local faith communities and places of worship.
• Staff and pupils are encouraged to challenge prejudicial or discriminatory behaviour.

Respect for democracy and support or participation in the democratic process.

• Children are involved in Democratic processes e.g voting for school counsellors and purchases for school
• Children have opportunity to have their voices heard through questionnaires and school surveys
• All children are encouraged to debate topics of interest and express their views to make a meaning contribution to the running of the school.

Respect for the basis on which the law is made and applies in England

• We have a consistent and clear behaviour policy which all stakeholders understand and follow.
• Behaviour incidents are regularly reviewed and shared with key stakeholders
• Collective worship regularly delivers national events and current issues.
• Visits from outside agencies eg NSPCC
• Links with Local Authority such as Police, Fire service

Support and respect for the liberties of all within the law

• Pupils have key roles in schools such as School Council, Lunch time Leaders, Prefects etc
• Though our citizenship work our pupils are provided with opportunity to develop and extend their individual participation within the school
• The aims, ethos and vision statement are embodied in all that we do in school.
• Within school, pupils are actively encouraged to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment.

Respect for and tolerance of different faiths and religious and other beliefs

• Our RE curriculum provides a broad and balanced education on a range of faiths, religions and cultures.
• Assemblies throughout the year focus on different faiths and festivals
• Themed cultural weeks in school.
• Partnerships with other local schools and communities.
• We have a number of EAL children and actively use school resources to promote their learning and integration into our school society.
