Hogarth’s Vision for Our Children in DT
At Hogarth academy, pupils are driven to take risks: becoming resourceful, innovative and capable citizens through evaluation of the past and present design and technology. They achieve a critical understanding of its impact on daily life and the wider world. They are empowered to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world using the language of design and technology. Pupils are encouraged to lead their designs based on the design briefs and success criteria.
Design Technology is taught in all year groups through at least one topic per term focussing on the key concepts of food technology, textiles, structures and mechanisms. To ensure high standards of teaching and learning in Design Technology, we implement a curriculum that is progressive throughout the whole school. We have developed a progression of skills document which breaks down the National Curriculum expectations into a series of ‘I am learning to’ statements for each year group and the areas of Design Technology; Investigate, Design, Make, Evaluate, and Food and Nutrition. These are used to support planning and teaching to ensure children build on key skills year on year to achieve the above expectations. Units of work are often made cross curricular, linking to other subjects taught, focusing on knowledge and skills stated in the National Curriculum. Pupils follow the ‘Investigate, Design, Make, Evaluate’ model which is rooted in development of technical knowledge and vocabulary. Children use their creativity and imagination to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. The children are given opportunities to reflect upon and evaluate past and present design technology, its uses and its effectiveness. Food technology is implemented across the school with children developing an understanding of where food comes from, the importance of a varied and healthy diet and how to prepare this.
Learning about design and technology starts in the early years at Hogarth Academy. We have mapped out how these skills develop for our youngest learners.
