Mathematics Vision

At Hogarth Academy we aim to provide a high-quality mathematics education, therefore providing children with the ability to understand the world; develop the fundamentals of mathematics through enjoyment and curiosity in problem solving and understand the relevance of mathematics in everyday life.

We believe that mathematics is an interconnected subject in which our pupils need to be able to move fluently between. Children should be able to use all mathematical concepts and therefore we aim to plan morning mathematics sessions to be practical and allow children to practise the fluency, varied fluency, problem solving and reasoning that will allow them to be successful mathematicians once they leave us. We believe that providing children will achieve all of the afore mentioned, children will be able to continue their mathematical journey with confidence and resilience that is so little found in young people currently. Our vision at Hogarth Academy with Maths is that we would like to abolish the idea that a child feels they are ‘no good’ at maths and nourish them mathematically with skills and strategies.

Our intention is for every child to be number confident for themselves and the wider community. At Hogarth Academy we ensure the statutory requirement of the National Curriculum Mathematics Programme of Study for Key Stage One and Two is met to ensure that every child in our school progresses and achieves to become successful mathematicians.

Intended Outcomes

Our pupils will learn to:

  • Develop the appropriate mathematical vocabulary associated with the full range of concepts/units from the National Curriculum.
  • Be confident in all aspects of mathematics, even where children find these hard.
  • To encourage a ‘try’ attitude to all areas of mathematics (being that all units are given equal weight and importance).
  • Use and apply all areas of mathematics through problem solving in written and practical tasks where children can acquire further knowledge, skills and understanding within each mathematical concept.
  • Develop a variety of mental strategies that are comfortable and personable to each child so they have confidence and mental fluency.
  • Develop mathematical reasoning and problem solving

Mathematics in the Early Years.

Mathematical knowledge , concepts and skills start from day one at Hogarth Academy and for some pupils this will be in EYFS. We have mapped out the learning and progression of mathematics against the EYFS curriculum for all our children.
