  • develop a love of and know the importance of geography within their lives
  • understand themselves within a global community and to make links with other children within their own city, their country and internationally.

Concept Driven Curriculum

At Hogarth Academy, we know our children are inquisitive about the world they live in and the wider universe. Through our teaching of Geography, the children will learn a range of subject specific skills, through which, they will gain a range of subject specific knowledge. The range of skills and knowledge is ensured through the key concepts that are:

Location and Place Knowledge

This is the study of knowing different locations around the world, including that of the locality of which they live which is very important for our children here at Hogarth Academy. We use correct directional language to describe features of different places, using visits where possible, first-hand experience and resources such as maps, atlases and surveys.

Human and Physical Geography

This is the study of features of different locations around the globe and use correct geographical language to explore and compare different human and physical aspects of different places including rivers, volcanoes and deserts.

Geographical Skills and Fieldwork

This is the study of using a range in complexity of maps, atlases, compasses and surveys. This also includes using different geographical keys, directional language and drawing to learn about different places in the world (where  possible through first-hand visits).

Geography in the Early Years .

Learning in Geography starts in the early years at Hogarth Academy. We have mapped out how these skills progress for our youngest children against the EYFS curriculum , understanding the world.
