Music

Subject Leader:

Vision for music

At Hogarth Academy we provide a classroom-based participatory and inclusive approach to music learning. Children are actively involved in using and developing their singing voices, using body percussion and whole body actions and learning to handle and play instruments effectively to create and express their own and others’ music.

Music is taught in all year groups EYFS-6 once a week, all classes have access to a very high-quality music curriculum using the Music Express scheme and the Nottingham Music Hub. To ensure high standards of teaching and learning in music, we implement a curriculum that is progressive throughout EYFS, KS1 and KS2. Children will gain experience and develop understanding of the dimensions of music. Music is planned to be cross-curricular, linking to other subjects taught, focussing on the knowledge and skills stated in the National Curriculum. Pupils are taught to perform, listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions, including the works of great composers and musicians. Music is implemented across the school with children developing an understanding of how to sing and use their voices and to create and compose music on their own and with others. Children also have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument, use technology appropriately and progress to the next level of musical excellence. By the end of Year 6, children will have the skills and knowledge necessary to learn any musical instrument in the future.
