Vision for MFL (French)

At Hogarth Academy we give all children the opportunity to gain the skills of learning a new language. Through our teaching of MFL, the children learn a range of skills including listening, speaking, reading and writing in order to gain a range of subject knowledge and the skill of learning a language.

French is taught in all year groups 1-6 once a week, all classes have access to a very high-quality foreign languages curriculum using the Language Angels scheme. To ensure high standards of teaching and learning in French, we implement a curriculum that is progressive throughout KS1 and KS2. Children will progressively acquire, use and apply a growing bank of vocabulary, language skills and grammatical knowledge organised around age appropriate topics and themes. French is planned to be cross-curricular, linking to other subjects taught, focusing on the knowledge and skills stated in the National Curriculum.

Pupils are taught about topics they have a secure subject knowledge in and can therefore further this knowledge into a foreign language. Children are given the opportunity to present each lesson to develop their speaking and listening skills. French is implemented across the school with children developing an understanding of the country and the importance of learning a foreign language. By the end of Year 6, children will have the skills and knowledge necessary to learn any foreign language in the future.
